Early surf films were created with the same mindset as any other sports film: to show the action and abilities of the athletes. Bruce Brown changed that direction with the Endless Summer and in a sense helped define the 'surf culture' that followed. In essence a simple story of two young guys who chose, at a time when society generally was still pretty conservative, to forego work and conventional living and head off in search of the perfect wave and live their dream of an endless summer. This is as much a film about the surfing lifestyle as the surfing itself. Footage from California, Hawaii, West Africa, Australia and Tahiti to the 'perfect waves' of South Africa. |
